Preparations for the 2019 joint Advancing Intercultural Research and Dialogueconference in Shanghai are steadily moving forward. We’re grateful for the strong interest shown with around 200 abstracts submitted – about half from here and half from abroad! What an opportunity to realize the conference theme of Crossing Boundaries and Building Bridges!

Workshop Rationale

We’re also thrilled to be hosting the first pre-conference PhD Workshop.  The goal of the Workshop is to bring together graduate students and senior scholars from around the world (thus all in English) to discuss theory, methods, and practice in the advanced study of intercultural relations.  The one-day Workshop will take place all day Sunday July 7, 2019 on the SISU campus.  This provides an enriching opportunity for PhD graduate student applicants to attend small group sessions led by senior scholars (like John Berry and Colleen Ward) and actively work on their dissertation research ideas with fellow interculturalists.

Qualifications for Participation

Doctoral students framing their research design stand to gain the most from workshopping their ideas with other doctoral students and senior scholars doing research in their areas of intercultural interest. Applicants at other stages in their doctoral work are also welcome—i.e., those just beginning a PhD program or those with an approved prospectus or who are currently dissertating.

In addition to attending the pre-conference workshop, participants will have the unique opportunity to present their research-in-progress, or project proposal, on a dedicated rapid-fire PhD Workshop panel during the actual conference days of the CAFIC-IAIR conference (Mon-Wed July 8-10), where panelists can share their ideas and receive further feedback from other senior inter- and cross-cultural scholars.

Call For Submissions

Graduate student applicants should submit a paper that is preparatory for the dissertation, or they may submit an edited version of the prospectus for their dissertation. Students not yet at this stage in their doctoral work may send a paper focused on a topic central to their interests in intercultural research. The sample work must not exceed 20 pages in length (in English only). (By March 15).

The Workshop planners are also interested in knowing if the proposal/paper has been submitted for presentation or publication. If so, please indicate where it has been submitted and the outcome of that submission. In addition, a letter of nomination from your dissertation advisor (or someone on your dissertation committee), your up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV), and the application cover sheet must accompany your submission. We are hoping to attract a quality and committed group for this wonderful cross-cultural research-in-development opportunity.

This PhD workshop fee is 250 RMB, includes tea breaks, lunch, and dinner and covers Sunday July 7 ONLY. Those planning on attending any of the sessions July 8-10 should officially register and pay the appropriate conference fee on the portal soon to be announced (“early bird” rates available until April 30).

Competed applications should be submitted to the pre-conference PhD Workshop contact person, Dr. Kelly McKay-Semmler, at Kelly.McKay-Semmler@usd.edu. The deadline for submissions has been now extended to March 15, 2019. Successful applicants will be notified by March 30, 2019.
