ACTIVE SISU SUPERVISING IC FACULTY – Introductions, Research Areas, and Interests
Program Director, Prof. Steve KULICH 顾力行 primarily advises students interested in the academic development of IC as a field, documenting IC history and development abroad and in China, reexamining leading IC theories and adapting/applying them to Chinese studies, and utilizing advanced IC qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to examine cross-cultural (social) psychology (values and identity studies) and interpersonal topics in Chinese contexts. (Limited by the number of MA students that he can directly supervise each semester, each of the affiliated faculty below advise in co-direction with Kulich).

Prof. ZHANG Hongling 张红玲 primarily advises students on topics related to IC education and competence development, IC in FLT teaching content and IC training methodologies, and also has interests in online (MOOC, etc.) and computer assisted language learning (CALL), applications related to educational technology and instructional medium. She focuses on how IC education/training contributes to human development and human performance (IC, cultural, and communicative competence) and issues related to IC adaptation/acculturation in different contexts. She is also interested in the global communication of Chinese culture.

Prof. YU Zhaohui 于朝晖 specializes in research on national public relations, and also has experience and interests in a wide range of business and HR management issues. Her particular interest is how national image is developed/perceived and how it affects communication.

Prof. ZHANG Yanli 张艳莉 primarily advises students interested in researching international exchange programs and intercultural education, IC competence, dealing with cross-cultural conflict, cultural adjustment and adaptation/acculturation processes, and teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (CEFL).

Prof. ZHANG Yan 章艳 primarily advises students interested in translation studies from the cultural perspective, including how cultural factors influence the activity of translation in general and the choices in translating specific texts. Another field she is interested in is issues related to teaching Chinese culture to foreign students, since she has been teaching such a course for years.

Asst. Prof. WU Junru 吴珺如 focuses on advising research regarding cultural influences on translation. Dr. ZHANG Xiaojia 张晓佳 primarily advises students for research interests that include literary studies, cultural studies, and cultural anthropology, especially issues of gender, subcultures, ethnicity, religion, etc. in the context of IC. She continues studies on the influential approach of women’s experience in ethnographic research (in co-direction with Steve Kulich).

Dr. Alex ENGLISH 英亚东is interested in assisting students and faculty regarding the psychological processes associated with intercultural communication and cross-cultural contact. Mr. English has a background in psychology with a focus in culture. For his doctoral work, he conducted four longitudinal studies examining the stress and coping process in intercultural and intra-cultural contexts. Dr. English is an active member in the International Association for Cross-cultural Psychology (IACCP), Asian Association of Social Psychology (AASP) and International Academy for Intercultural Research (IAIR). He is comfortable with using and coaching others in various statistical programs (SPSS, AMOS and MPlus) and has published several articles in peer-reviewed impact factor journals. (in co-direction with Steve Kulich).

Asst. Prof. David HENRY 戴伟(Continuing on as adjunct faculty and businessman), advises students interested in studying intercultural business communications (with his IBC group), business training approaches, and CC management topics, with emphasis on using discourse analysis as a key to cultural communications. He is also interested in teaching/training applications to engage the affective domain (how we link thought and feelings in communication, using film and drama in teaching) as well as the social-cultural semiotic-personal linkages between language and thought (especially applications of Lev Vygotsky), and IC theory.
